Battle to the Last Corner (ENG)
A strong performance from the 21-year-old rider representing the VLR / NIWA Racing team.
After an intense fight in a large leading group of around ten riders – something the Thruxton circuit is famous for – Kas managed to finish on the podium in both races, further extending his lead in the championship.
Friday
Thruxton, a new track for Kas, is different from traditional British circuits. By completing many laps during the first free practice session, a plan was created for the second session. This plan worked well, and Kas immediately proved himself with a lap time already faster than the track record. He ended the first day in first position.
Saturday
Saturday’s schedule included one qualifying session and a race later in the day. The wind was stronger than the day before, making slipstreaming extremely important on the back straight. Early in the session, Kas timed this perfectly, taking over the provisional pole position. The other riders were busy waiting for each other, so no one improved their time at the end of the session. This secured Kas’s third pole position of the year.
The first race of the weekend was different from the previous ones. With a leading group of about 10 riders, positions were constantly changing. During the race, Kas felt strong and was able to stay within the top four. As earlier in the day, the wind was still strong, so positioning made a big difference in the final lap. In the last lap, with a small gap to the rider ahead, Kas positioned himself in third place. It worked out perfectly – by braking the latest, he made his move stick. The first win of the weekend was a fact.
Sunday
In the warm-up, Kas felt good on the Suzuki GSX-8R and once again rode under the track record. Starting from third place, he quickly joined the leading group. The wind was less intense than in the first race, so the pace was much higher. After many position changes at the start of the race, one of Kas’s biggest rivals, Dessoy, managed to take the lead. While Dessoy was at the front, the riders behind him were dueling heavily, allowing a gap to form. Kas tried to close the gap but received a “Drop one position” penalty for allegedly overtaking under yellow flags. The rider from Boxtel put in a strong pace in the final two laps and was able to secure second place.
“I’m very satisfied with how the weekend went. It wasn’t the easiest weekend since I wasn’t feeling completely fit. To go home with a 77-point lead over second place is something I never expected. I can’t thank the VLR / NIWA Racing team enough, and of course not to forget all my personal sponsors and supporters.”
Next on the calendar is a home race during the Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaft (IDM) in Assen next week (15–17 August).

Na veel strijd in een grote kopgroep van ongeveer tien man – waar het Thruxton circuit om bekendstaat – wist Kas beide wedstrijden op het podium te eindigen en daarmee opnieuw zijn leiding in het kampioenschap te vergroten.
Vrijdag
Thruxton, een nieuwe baan voor Kas, is anders dan de traditionele Engelse circuits. Door in de eerste vrije training veel rondes te rijden, kon er een plan worden gemaakt voor de tweede sessie. Dit plan werkte goed: Kas zette direct een rondetijd neer die al onder het baanrecord lag. Daarmee sloot hij de eerste dag af op de eerste positie.
Zaterdag
Op zaterdag stond er één kwalificatie en later op de dag één race op het programma. De wind was sterker dan de dag ervoor, waardoor slipstreamen op het lange achterste rechte stuk erg belangrijk werd. Vroeg in de sessie plande Kas dit perfect en pakte hij de voorlopige pole position. Omdat andere rijders veel op elkaar wachtten, verbeterde niemand zich meer aan het einde van de sessie. Dit leverde Kas zijn derde pole position van het jaar op.
De eerste race van het weekend verliep anders dan eerdere races. Met een kopgroep van ongeveer tien man werd er constant van positie gewisseld. Kas voelde zich sterk en wist zich te handhaven binnen de top vier. Net als eerder op de dag speelde de wind een grote rol in de positionering voor de laatste ronde. Met een klein gat naar de rijder voor hem, plaatste Kas zich op de derde positie. Het plan pakte perfect uit: door als laatste te remmen maakte hij zijn inhaalactie succesvol. De eerste overwinning van het weekend was een feit.
Zondag
In de warm-up had Kas opnieuw een goed gevoel met de Suzuki GSX-8R en reed hij weer onder het baanrecord. Vanaf de derde startplek sloot hij snel aan bij de kopgroep. De wind was minder heftig dan in de eerste race, waardoor het tempo hoger lag. Na veel wisselingen in de openingsfase nam een van Kas’ grootste concurrenten, Dessoy, de leiding. Terwijl Dessoy aan kop reed, vochten de coureurs daarachter fel om posities, waardoor er een gat ontstond. Kas probeerde dit nog te dichten, maar kreeg een “Drop one position”-penalty voor inhalen onder geel. De coureur uit Boxtel zette in de laatste twee rondes een hoog tempo neer en wist alsnog als tweede te finishen.
“Ik ben erg tevreden met hoe het weekend is verlopen. Het was niet het makkelijkste weekend aangezien ik niet volledig fit was. Om naar huis te gaan met een voorsprong van 77 punten op de nummer twee had ik nooit verwacht. Ik kan het VLR / NIWA Racing team niet genoeg bedanken. Natuurlijk niet te vergeten al mijn persoonlijke sponsoren en supporters.”
Het volgende op de kalender is een thuisrace tijdens het Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaft (IDM) in Assen volgende week (15 t/m 17 augustus).
