The opening round of the World Sportbike Championship told a very different story than expected for Boxtel-based rider Kas Beekmans.
The new World Sportbike class has finally got underway, and many eyes were on the Dutch riders, including Kas. With so many unanswered questions surrounding the new class, no specific result could be expected beforehand. But it quickly became clear over the course of the weekend that the 21-year-old was not there simply to make up the numbers.
Friday’s schedule featured free practice and qualifying.
The VLR Racing Suzuki Team, for which Kas competes, had faced several challenges during the pre-event test. But on Friday, March 27, they showed strong pace in free practice. “A clear step forward,” Kas said after setting the 10th fastest time. From that moment on, a target was cautiously set for the rest of the weekend. Together with team owner Kevin van Leuven, it was agreed that the first two rows on the grid would be a great objective for qualifying. With a good strategy, they took on that challenge later on Friday, resulting in an impressive 4th place on the grid. This gave the Brabant rider even more motivation for his very first race of the season.
“Coming from winning races in an English international championship to competing in an official world championship, you never really know where you stand compared to your rivals. But to end your first day with such a strong result was more than I could have dreamed of.”
After completing all of his usual race-day rituals, it was finally time. The start of Kas’s debut in the World Sportbike Championship. Due to a penalty for another rider who had qualified in second place, Kas moved up to 3rd on the grid. With an outstanding start, he entered the first corner in the lead. A large front group formed, with plenty of hard racing, but Kas held his own among the leading positions. Unfortunately, disaster struck. Oil on the track from another bike caused multiple crashes, including Kas, forcing him to retire from the race.
As a result, the second race became even more difficult for him. He had to start from 14th place on the grid. Unfortunately, the problems did not end there. After a difficult opening lap, he slowly but surely worked his way forward, only to be informed that he had received a penalty for movement at the start. He had to complete two long laps, costing him around 10 seconds. In the end, he crossed the finish line in 17th place.
“The races may not have delivered the result we were hoping for, but they did give us something just as valuable. Before the weekend, it was unclear where we stood in terms of level, but this weekend I proved to myself and everyone else that we belong at the front. And that gives me confidence for the next race.”
The next round will take place on April 17, 18 and 19 on home soil. Once again, Kas will give it his all in the hope of giving the Dutch fans a chance to hear the national anthem.

De nieuwe World Sportbike klasse is eindelijk van start gegaan, en er waren veel ogen gericht op de Nederlandse vertegenwoordigers waaronder Kas een was. Vanwege nog vele vraagtekens omtrent de nieuwe klasse was vooraf geen resultaat te verwachten. Maar al snel in het weekend bleek dat de eenentwintig jarige jongen niet mee deed als veld vulling.
Op vrijdag stonden de vrije training en kwalificatie op het programma.
Het VLR Racing Suzuki Team waar Kas voor uitkomt had nodige uitdagingen tijdens de test vooraf. Maar op vrijdag 27 Maart tijdens de vrije training komen ze goed voor de dag. “Een duidelijke stap” vertelde Kas, nadat hij de 10e tijd had genoteerd. Vanuit hier werd er lichtjes al een doel gemaakt voor de rest van het weekend. Samen met team eigenaar Kevin van Leuven werd er gesproken dat voor de kwalificatie de eerste twee startrijen een mooi doel was. Met een goede strategie gingen ze later op de vrijdag deze uitdaging aan, met als resultaat een 4e startpositie. Dit gaf de Brabantse coureur extra zin in zijn aller eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen.
“Komend van wedstrijden winnen in een Engels internationaal kampioenschap naar een officieel wereld kampioenschap is altijd even afwachten waar je staat ten opzichte van je concurrentie. Maar om je eerste dag af te sluiten met een zo een goed resultaat had ik alleen maar durven dromen.”
Na alle wedstrijd rituele die hij altijd doet is het dan echt tijd. De start van Kas zijn debuut in het WK Sportbike. Door een penalty van een medecoureur op de 2e startplek schuift Kas door naar een 3e plek. En met een enorm goede start duikt Kas als leider de eerste bocht in. Er ontstaat een grote kopgroep waar flink gestreden word, maar Kas houd zich goed in de voorste posities. Helaas sloeg het noodlot toe. Olie op de baan van een andere motor, zorgt voor meerdere valpartijen waaronder Kas een, wat resulteerde in een uitval.
Door dit resultaat word het hem ook in de tweede race moeilijker gemaakt. Hij moet starten vanaf een 14e plek. Helaas houden hier de problemen nog niet helemaal op. Na een moeilijke openingsronde manoeuvreert hij zich langzaam maar zeker naar voren om vervolgens te horen dat hij een penalty heeft vanwege beweging bij de start. Hij moet twee keer de longlap pakken wat hem ongeveer 10 seconden koste. Uiteindelijk komt hij als 17e over de finish.
“De wedstrijden hebben niet zo zeer het gewenste resultaat gebracht, maar wel iets minstens zo waardevols. Vooraf was onbekend waar we stonden qua niveau, maar ik heb dit weekend mezelf en iedereen bewezen dat we bij de top horen. En dat geeft me zelfvertrouwen voor de volgende wedstrijd.”
De volgende wedstrijd zal plaats vinden op 17, 18 en 19 April op thuis gebied. Kas zal hier opnieuw zijn uiterste best doen om de Nederlandse fans het Wilhelmus te kunnen geven.
